Men's "A" Side @ 29th Annual Shamrock Rugby Tournament (Slippery Rock, Pa)
The Erie Rugby Club's Men's Team headed to Slippery Rock, Pa this weekend for the 29th Annual Shamrock Rugby Tournament. Erie opened the day against division rival South Pittsburgh RFC, and walked away with a 17-5 win. This put Erie in the winner's bracket, and within one game from the tournament championship! Erie's second match of the day was against the Slippery Rock University Alumni team (SLOBS). Erie scored early and often, and eventually went on to win handily 49-7...securing a spot in the championship game against the favored Slippery Rock University A Side.
The championship game was much closer, with Slippery Rock taking an early 7-0 lead. Erie muscled their way back down the field for the second try of the game, and after missing the conversion kick...were down 7-5. A very determined Slippery Rock team answered right back with a try, and after missing the conversion...SRU went into halftime with a solid 12-5 lead. After struggling back and forth with a very young and talented SRU team, Erie was able to score a late second half try and conversion...tying the game at 12. With only a few minutes left, Slippery Rock gave up two costly penalties inside their territory...which both resulted in penalty kicks (3pts each), putting Erie in the lead 18-12 as time expired.
This was exactly what the Erie Men needed to get our season back on track. Let's continue to work hard in preparation for the weekend home match against Lockport, and of course...the Mad Anthony's Ale Rugby Tournament on May 1st.
Scoring for Erie on the day were: Kevin Jackson and Tom Tredway each with 3 tries (5pts each), Matt Verga and Billy Kruzewski each with 2 tries (5pts each), Austin White and Bruce Stevens each with 1 try (5pts), and Bruce Stevens with 9 Conversions (2pts each) & 2 Penalty Kicks (3pts each).
U19 Boy's (High School) Rugby @ Kenmore High School (Buffalo, NY)
Erie's U19 Boy's team headed to Buffalo NY this weekend for their third match of the season against Kenmore High School RFC. After two tough losses, the Erie U19's looked to turn their season around with this match. Fortunately, they had a tough week of practice, and took the field ready to play...as they went on to win a nail-biter by the score of 22-19 to secure their first win of the season!
Scoring for the Erie U19 Boy's (or at least, as reported) were: Paul Coffey, Nathaniel Adams, Tony Cordavano, and Troy Kelley each with a try (5pts), and Troy Kelley with 1 conversion (2pts).
